Thu. 8th March, 5pmDr Fiona-Jane Brown speaking on the university's most famous urban legend and looking into the veracity of the tale. Many generations of students have been treated to the rather gory tale of how the despised janitor, George Downie was seized upon as a prank and subjected to a mock trial where he was informed he would be executed. The students only intended to scare him, but Downie died of fright, causing them to spirit the body away and cover up the affair. However, Kings College claims to have no record of a George Downie being a sacrist, yet there is a "cairn" to him in Seaton Park, which originally stood on a hillock called Downie's Howe, which 19th century Aberdonians believed was his grave at Berryden. Dr Brown's talk will uncover the truth and scotch the myths once and for all of this fabulous legend.

Thu. 23rd November, 5pmJoin us for our last lecture of the term!
Prof Robert Frost - Identity Doubtful? The supposed Polish Portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie. ‘This lecture explores an eighteenth-century painting of a young man in Polish dress which has been languishing in the National Portrait Gallery’s store in Southwark since it was donated in 1922. According to two inscriptions on the canvas, it is a portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie. All the experts on Stuart portraits state that it cannot possibly be a genuine portrait of the prince, but none of them have investigated it properly. This lecture examines the provenance of the painting, analyses its Jacobite provenance, and explores the Polish background to the Stuart story to suggest that the identification has been too readily dismissed, and that the picture deserves closer examination.’ |

“We agree to disagree.” The talk explores the reception of Reformation ideas in a country that had been multi-religious for centuries before Roman Christianity broke up in dissent with the Protestant Reformation in 1525. During the 500th anniversary year commemorating Luther’s posting of the Reformation theses in Wittenberg, the Polish and Lithuanian Reformations point beyond the usual ‘Western’ focus of many textbooks and show the great variety of attempts to solve the problems that came with religious tension ad conflict. |

Thu. 12th October, 5pmCome and learn about Scottish Political Culture with Dr Claire Hawes, with our first lecture series of the year!
'Politics and the Public Domain in Fifteenth-Century Scotland' The 'crown-magnate debate' has formed the bedrock of the political historiography of fifteenth-century Scotland for almost forty years, with scholars arguing over whether the relationship between the King of Scots and his leading subjects was essentially cooperative or competitive. This lecture will examine the problems inherent in such an approach, and argue for an alternative model which takes account of contemporary political ideas and legal structures, as well as personal relationships. |
